Back to My Point About Beyonce and High Fashion

These leggings that Beyonce wore on the BET Awards are Balenciaga. No, Sloane, they are not a Tina Knowles creation or from a local Rave or Forever 21...When I saw the leggings, I immediately thought back to the Paris shows and the android leggings from Mr. Ghesquière's runway, but I thought, no, those look like a bad knock-off....a costume sewn up for the occasion. When I tell you these made my heart swoon back in September. They are so funky and futuristic, but I will admit they are conceptual fashion to me, even if I could afford them I doubt that I would have the balls to wear them. So, I give her props for trying -- attempting -- to pull off the look. And yes it is a costume so we can't be too mad, but do you see what I mean about how she takes these high-end, conceptual frocks and makes them look so run of the mill and down right cheesy? You may hate my Posh, but I bet you Vickie could pull these off in a much more chic fashion...

Problem with your argument is that it reinforces the long held belief that only women who look like 12 yr old boys can wear high fashion. Most women in general, let's not even talk about Black women, are not built like Posh or even Naomi. So, may be instead of bashing beyonce this time, who many times does make questionable choices, you need to reexamine your thoughts and prejudices regarding fashion and beauty. Everyone you have cited as someone who makes high fashion "work" is waif thin. It's important to celebrate healthy body images, and not get sucked into the myopic vortex of these crazy, women hating designers, a-la Karl Lagrefeld, who celebrate little boys and not grown assed women.

I get what you mean about the 2 outfits looking different, but that does not make the women with the curvier body look cheap. That's just reinforcing destructive, colonial views on body image. The core of my problem with the articulation of your argument is that what is considered beautiful and of high value is the thinner body type, more prevalent and celebrated in European or Asian cultures, and what is "cheap" and devalued is the body type more prevalent in Latin and African cultures. It's the same garment; the only real difference is the body in it and the prejudices that we inherit.

It has nothing to do with Beyonce's size, its her carriage for fashion. that is how i judge people - the way they carry off the look. And really Beyonce is not a large woman, okay by hollywood/fashion standards she is big...but Beyonce can wear just about anything she wants cause her body is crazy. Its the tacky that she has to fight to keep at bay.

but for real, we would have never seen these leggings off the runway if not for B so she gets my props for that. i find this to be a HIGHLY more successful, not to mention reasonable, runway to editorial transition than posh and the chanel panties. those leggings scream COSTUME. also, i was really disappointed at all the blog hate that B received for jacking kylie minogue's show idea. to that point:

1st-- kylie's show was back in '02. that's long ago enough. a good idea, is a good idea.

2nd-- kylie's version totally sucked. she barely performed and pissed away her own good idea. kudos to B's team for recognizing and improving on that wasted opportunity.

3rd-- B kinda tore the house down (especially in light of what kelly r. did, or rather didn't do, next)
and she never gets credit when she does that. ok, last year she kinda sucked when she performed deja vu, but this year, she kinda didn't.

Oh, so right Korin...I must state that Beyonce is the only performer that I know of who can dance at such a pace and STILL sound just like the record...hearing her perform and then hearing Kelly and Ciara...such a marked difference. She sounds amazing live and to be dancing the whole time...brava!
